Artis Lane
b. 1927
Ontario College of Art and the University of Toronto, Canada; Cranbrook Academy, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; and the University of California at Los Angeles.
An accomplished portrait painter and sculptress of national prominence, Artis Lane took an artistic leap in the 80’s, and began an exploration of the elegant conceptual themes for which she is better known today. A common underpinning of spiritual philosophy connects this artist’s highly regarded work; “ I believe in the concept of Universal mind, an intangible, unbounded life energy, if you will, that underlies all objective experience. My goal is to have my work somehow mirror and express this concept.”
Lane has had numerous solo and group exhibitions including the Santa Monica Museum of Art, CA; the Hammonds House Museum, Atlanta, GA; and the York Quay Gallery, Toronto, Canada. Lane’s work is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C.; as well as many important private collections. She has received awards such as the Dominion of Canada Award for portraiture; the Museum of African American Art Award, Los Angeles; and the Medgar Evers Community Service Award, NAACP-Beverly Hills/Hollywood, CA.
